Historical Context
After Montenegro's independence in 2006, Serbia formed its own national team. In their debut as an independent nation, at the 2010 World Cup, they surprised by beating Germany 1-0, with a goal from Milan Jovanović. FIFA recognizes the Serbian national team as the direct successor to the former Yugoslavia, with nine World Cup appearances between 1930 and 2002.
