After a disappointing debut season in 2015 (8th in the East, 17th overall), NYCFC hired Frenchman Patrick Vieira — in his first professional coaching role — and experienced a remarkable turnaround in 2016: they finished 2nd in the Eastern Conference, jumping from 37 to 54 points, and qualified for the playoffs for the first time in the club's history. David Villa was named season MVP with 23 goals.

NYCFC hosted their first home playoff game, at Yankee Stadium, against Toronto FC. After losing 2-0 in the first leg, they needed a two-goal victory — but ended up being thrashed 5-0, with a Sebastian Giovinco hat-trick, resulting in the worst playoff defeat in the club's history (7-0 on aggregate).

The following season, reinforced by Maxi Moralez and Alexander Ring, NYCFC went even further in the regular season: they finished as Supporters' Shield runners-up, with the best campaign in the club's history to date (16 wins, 9 draws, 9 losses, 57 points). In the playoffs, however, they once again fell in the conference semifinals — this time against Columbus Crew, in a dramatic series decided after the expulsion of defender Alexander Callens.
