From Finalist to Missing the Playoffs
One year after reaching the 2015 MLS Cup final, Columbus Crew SC experienced one of its worst campaigns in 2016, under coach Gregg Berhalter: they finished 9th in the Eastern Conference (18th overall), with a record of 8 wins, 12 draws, and 14 losses, missing the playoffs.
The Kamara vs. Higuain Controversy
The season was marked by injuries to key players like Federico Higuain and a behind-the-scenes dispute: a disagreement between leading scorer Kei Kamara and Higuain over taking a penalty kick led to the striker's departure for the New England Revolution in May of that year.
Ola Kamara, the Positive Highlight
Amidst the turmoil, Norwegian Ola Kamara, in his debut MLS season, led the team with 16 goals — but the defense struggled, including a 10-game winless streak, the worst in the league that year, right in the middle of the season. A historic piece precisely because it represents one of the most dramatic chapters in the club's recent history.
