Founded in Tribute to the Great Fire · 1997
Founded on October 8, 1997, exactly on the 126th anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the club was named in honor of the event, with a crest inspired by the cross of Saint Florian, patron saint of firefighters, and the colors of the city flag.
The Unprecedented "Double" of 1998
In their debut MLS season in 1998, Chicago Fire won both the MLS Cup and the U.S. Open Cup in the same year — an unprecedented feat for an expansion team in any major U.S. sports league, only replicated 20 years later by another sport.
Tradition in the U.S. Open Cup
In addition to the 1998 title, the club lifted the U.S. Open Cup again in 2000, 2003, and 2006, becoming one of the most successful teams in the competition's history, as well as being the only MLS club to have won titles in the league's Eastern, Western, and Central conferences.
