The Sesquicentennial Season

The 2025/26 season is not just any season for Hibernian — it's the year the club celebrates 150 years of history, marked by a series of special events in Edinburgh, including a gala dinner at Edinburgh Castle.

"A shirt for a once-in-a-lifetime anniversary."

As part of the celebrations, in July 2025, the club recreated the historic 1955 match against Rot-Weiss Essen — the first European Cup game played by a British team. Hibernian was the pioneer that paved the way for all British football on the continent.

150 Years of History

1875
Founded by Irish immigrants in Edinburgh's Cowgate neighborhood. Born as a club for the Irish Catholic community who had fled the Great Famine. First match on Christmas 1875, against Hearts.
1887
First Scottish Cup — the first club from eastern Scotland to win the title. Two months later, they defeated Preston North End in a match billed as the World Football Championship.
1948–52
Golden era: three Scottish titles in five years with the "Famous Five" — legendary forward line featuring Gordon Smith, Lawrie Reilly, and Eddie Turnbull. One of the greatest attacks in British football history.
1955
First British team to play in the European Cup — the competition that would become the Champions League. Hibernian reached the semi-finals, losing to Stade Reims. Manchester United only entered the following year.
2016
Scottish Cup won after a 114-year drought — the longest trophy drought in history. 3-2 victory over Rangers. One of the biggest celebrations in recent Scottish football history.
2025/26
150th anniversary. Historic season with special kits, events in Edinburgh, and the recreation of the 1955 match against Rot-Weiss Essen. This is the shirt for that year.
