The Arrival of HMS Flora
The British cruiser HMS Flora of the Royal Navy docked in Coquimbo bay. The crew included excellent Welsh players, undefeated in friendly matches throughout South America.
The Series of Games
The sailors challenged the port's team to a series of matches. Four extremely balanced games: 2-2, 3-3, 1-0 for Coquimbo, and 3-0 for the British.
The Gentleman's Agreement
For the fifth and decisive game, an agreement was made: if the British won, they would maintain their unbeaten streak. If the Chileans won, they would take the crew's game jerseys.
🏆 The Victory and the Prize
Coquimbo won the final game 1-0. As a gesture of sportsmanship, the commander handed over the 11 yellow and black shirts — the colors of Wales in honor of Saint David, the patron saint of the country.
The Legacy · Club Founded in 1958
The original shirts belonged to the Welsh in honor of Saint David, whose historic colors are black and yellow. The people of the port adopted the combination with such pride that when Coquimbo Unido was officially founded in 1958, the gold and black uniform was maintained — immortalizing that historic victory of 1903.
