Club Deportivo Palestino: The Story of South American Football's Most Unique Club

Garrincha Shirts · Stories of South American Football Club Deportivo Palestino: The History of South American Football's Most Unique Club Founded in 1920 by immigrants in southern Chile, Palestino is today considered by the Palestinian government itself as "the second national team of the Palestinian people." Its jerseys are among the most symbolic in world football. The Diaspora that Created a Football Club The history of Club Deportivo Palestino begins long before any goal or title. It starts in the 19th century when the Ottoman Empire imposed mandatory military service on Christian minorities in the Palestine region. Persecuted and forcibly recruited for battles that were not their own, thousands of Palestinian families — mostly Christian — decided to emigrate. Many went to Brazil, others to Argentina. But it was in Chile that the largest community settled. Today, Chile is home to between 350,000 and 500,000 Palestinians and their descendants — the largest Palestinian community outside the Middle East. The community is so influential that it controls approximately 60% of the Chilean textile industry and has about 10% representation in the country's Senate. It is no wonder that Chile is considered one of the biggest international political allies of the Palestinian cause. On August 20, 1920, in Osorno, southern Chile, during an Olympics of Foreign Colonies, this community created its club. There, Club Deportivo Palestino was born — with the green, red, white, and black colors of the Palestinian flag sewn directly into the uniform. El Tino: Titles, Relegations, and Resurrections For more than 30 years, Palestino operated as an amateur club. In 1952, when Chilean football professionalized, the club entered the Second Division and quickly gained promotion to the elite. In 1955, came the first major title: the Chilean Championship. This achievement projected the club nationally and consolidated the presence of the Palestinian community in the country's sports scene. Its peak would come in the 1970s. Palestino won the 1978 Chilean Championship and the Copa Chile three times (1975, 1977, and 2018). In the 1979 Copa Libertadores, the club reached the semi-finals — the greatest international result in its history. During this same period, legendary defender Elías Figueroa, an idol of the Chilean national team and Internacional de Porto Alegre, wore the Palestino jersey for three seasons. In the 1978 Libertadores, Palestino recorded one of the tournament's most surprising results: they defeated São Paulo 2-1 inside the Morumbi, in the golden era of São Paulo football. Decades later, in 2019, the club returned to the Libertadores and faced Flamengo at the Maracanã — a meeting that took on symbolic dimensions far beyond football, with the conflict in the Middle East as a backdrop. The Most Controversial Jersey in World Football If there's one thing that put Palestino on the global football map, it was a jersey. In 2013, the club launched a uniform where the number 1 on the players' backs had the shape of the map of Palestine — the original territories, before the creation of the State of Israel in 1948. The controversy was immediate: the Israeli embassy in Chile filed a formal complaint, the Chilean Federation fined the club US$1,300, and the uniform was banned from official games. For fans and the Palestinian community worldwide, the jersey became an icon of resistance. Today, collectors from all over the world seek this specific model as a historical piece — not just a football jersey, but a political and cultural artifact. "More than a team. All united for a people." — Official motto of Club Deportivo Palestino The Second National Team of Palestine In 2014, the president of the Palestinian National Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, sent an official message to the club recognizing Palestino as "the second national team of the Palestinian people." In 2016, the club made a historic tour of Palestine, playing friendly matches with the local national team and clubs in the region. The delegation was received by Abbas himself. More than 90,000 of the club's followers on social media are from the Arab world. At the Municipal de La Cisterna stadium in Santiago, a gigantic Palestinian flag permanently flies above the advertising boards. The Bank of Palestine — the bank's only operation outside the Middle East — has been the club's main sponsor for years. There is no other club like it in the world: founded by Palestinians, outside Palestine, which became a symbol of an entire people. Why the Palestino Jersey is a Collector's Item For the football jersey collector, Palestino represents everything that makes this hobby special: unique history, symbolism beyond sport, market rarity, and design loaded with meaning. Each model features the colors of the Palestinian flag in the fabric. Each season is a new declaration of identity. In Brazil, finding an original Palestino jersey is an almost impossible task. Sports stores do not carry the club's merchandise. Marketplaces offer unverified replicas.
