Green, white, and green. Palmeiras uses the colors of Italy – and that's no coincidence. The history of the green and white jersey is a living portrait of Italian immigration in São Paulo and the construction of the identity of the greatest national champion.
Palestra Itália: The Italian Origin of Palmeiras
Palmeiras was founded on August 26, 1914, by Italian immigrants in São Paulo, under the name Societa Sportiva Palestra Itália. The green and white colors were chosen in homage to the Italian flag – and thus the green and white identity that persists to this day was born. During World War II, the Brazilian government prohibited associations with Axis countries, and the club was forced to change its name. In 1942, it became Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras – and debuted with the new name, winning its first match.
The Nickname "Pig" and Its Curious Origin
The origin of the nickname "Porco" (Pig) is quite curious. In 1969, the club did not allow the registration of new players in the Campeonato Paulista, to replace two deceased athletes, earning the label of having a "pig spirit" (meaning bad-tempered or spoil-sport). Today, "Porco" is celebrated with pride by Palmeiras fans, who have turned the moniker into a symbol of resistance and grit.
The 8 Stars on the Emblem and What They Represent
The eight stars on the Palmeiras emblem have nothing to do with titles – they indicate the month of August, when the club was founded. For Palmeiras fans, this is one of the lesser-known curiosities about the uniform they wear with such pride.
The Biggest Rout in Palmeiras vs. Corinthians History
Wearing the green and white jersey, Palmeiras delivered a historic rout: 8-0 over Corinthians on November 5, 1933 – the biggest in the classic history between the two rivals. The goals were scored by Romeu (4), Imparato (3), and Fabardo. A date that every Palmeiras fan cherishes.
The Champion of Everything: The Jersey That Never Stops Winning
With 10 Brazilian titles (the most of any national club), 3 Copa Libertadores, 1 Copa Mercosul, and more than 47 state titles, the green and white Palmeiras jersey is the most victorious in Brazilian football. In 1999, at Parque Antártica, it was the first non-European club to beat Deportivo Cali-COL and become champion of the Copa Libertadores.
A Jersey with an Italian Soul and a Brazilian Heart
The green and white jersey has carried the soul of Italian immigrants and the passionate heart of Brazilian fans for over a century. It is one of the most valued uniforms by collectors, especially in retro versions from the 70s and 90s. At Garrincha Shirts, you'll find the best models to celebrate this unique history.
